CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) -- Fire swept through a furniture warehouse, collapsing the building's roof and claiming the lives of nine firefighters in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify."
"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley said at a morning news conference. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."
Two employees in the building were rescued from the blaze, which broke out at about 7 p.m. Monday in the Sofa Super Store and warehouse, Riley said. (Watch firefighters salute as comrades' bodies are brought out )
Firefighters punched a hole through a wall of the warehouse to reach them.
Firefighters, police officers and other rescue workers saluted as the bodies were carried from the warehouse during the night.
"To lose nine is just a tragedy of immense proportions," Riley said. "To lose nine is just unbelievable."
Riley said the county coroner planned to disclose the names of the dead.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Riley said arson was not suspected. He said the blaze apparently started in a storage area. He was unsure whether there were sprinklers in the building.
Witnesses said the store's roof collapsed, throwing debris over about two-dozen rescue workers. Onlookers were hit with flying ash. (See bird's-eye view of warehouse)
"It was like a 30-foot tornado of flames," said Mark Hilton, who was struck in his eye.
Firefighter Eric Glover told CNN that he was at a golf tournament to benefit the family of a firefighter who had recently died when he heard the call on the radio. By the time he arrived, he said, the roof had already collapsed.
"It all happened pretty fast. They didn't have a chance," Glover said.
"You're always close to the guys because you spend a third of your life with these guys. Every third day you spend 24 hours there, so you get real close," he said.
Daniel Shahid, a salesman at a nearby car dealership, said firefighters came in asking for towels.
"The next thing you know, we were carrying hoses, directing traffic, everybody from the dealership," he said.
Shahid said he saw firefighters rescue four people from the building. "They were struggling. They were covered in black soot. They looked scared out of their minds," Shahid said.
He later told CNN the roof collapsed too quickly for anyone to escape. "It came from nowhere," he said. "It was a standing structure and five seconds later it was on the ground."
Riley called the missing firefighters heroes.
"This is a profession that we must never take for granted," the mayor said. "There's a fire raging and they go toward it."
On Tuesday morning, flowers were left on the sidewalk in front of the wreckage of the one-story furniture store and its adjacent, slightly taller warehouse, both of which continued to smolder.

COMPUTERS CHANGE THE LEARNING STYLE

summary:The computer had modest beginnings in areas where it was used as a specialist tool. The first electronic computer was built in the 1930s and was solely for the use of undergraduate students in Iowa State University to handle mathematical computations in nuclear physics. However, only 10 years later computers were starting to change our life style, the way we do business and many other things (Elliot, 1994) and by the late 1980's networks were expanding to embrace sections of the general public.

WHY IMMERSION TEACHING WORKS

WHY IMMERSION TEACHING WORKS
summary:agree that the Canadian immersion and bilingual schools have been successful in producing functionally bilingual students. In the province of Manitoba, there are French, Ukrainian, and German immersion schools,Hebrew bilingual schools, and a school for native Indian students. English immersion programmes are popular for students from the province of Quebec as well as from countries such as Libya and Japan. However, Mr Whelpton's suggested condition that teachers in these schools must be fully bilingual may be unnecessary.

Describe your blog and your blogging experiences

My blog’s name is “my cool cat”. I choose this name because of my favorite pet is cat. His name is Dwu Dwu. He is a very naughty and smart cat so that I want to share my cat for many of you. Let you know why I use “my cool cat” to do my blog’s name. In my blog, I choose black background and use bright color words. I want my blog look like star in the night are very shine. On my blog’s sidebar, most of us can link our group members’ weblog, and then we put online dictionaries that can help someone who wants to use online dictionaries and have no idea about how to choose good online dictionaries, so our links can help them to choose good online dictionaries easier. Then, we also put online ESL/EFL resources on the sidebar. ESL/EFL resources mean English as Second Language/English as a Foreign Language that can help someone who wants to learn English and do not know how to learn English by self. Some of our group members put a monthly calendar and use music which is their favorite song to do background music. At the first class, teacher told us that we should to do our own weblog in this semester. I was so happy to hear this information because I wanted to try to do my weblog.
Did these activities help me learn English? Of cause. In this semester, I learn a lot of skills about how to search good websites and how to set up links on my sidebar. It was my first time to use English blog. There were lots of things need to learn again, but I still had a lot of fun in this weblog. And then, I can use websites to train up my English ability. For me, weblog is a good space to share some information to others, especially other English learners. We can use weblog to share some good news, how to learn English skills, how to search good websites and any different kind of information what you want. In the other words, weblog is convenient and useful.
The weblog’s features attracted me is sidebar. Why I choose sidebar? Every time, I flip through websites, I admire them. How do they do? I want to learn, but nobody can teach me. All of my friends are not good users of computer so that no one can help me. In this class, I learned how to links on sidebar, even though I used a lot of time to learn. Now I can put any websites what I want. On my blog, I search good websites on sidebar and links that can help me to search which article I want quickly and easier to find. It can help me to retrench time. I don’t need to read all articles and read all articles slowly.
What were my difficulties? At the beginning, I thought it is easier to do weblog just like post something on Internet. We should not use any syntax on weblog just post on Internet. When I use it and I did not think so. In fact, if we wanted to post some special things that weblog did not have. We should to find its URL, which is some data you want to post, and to set up. For me, this is the first time to use weblog and I’m not a good user of computer so that it’s too difficult to do well. However, when I read my final weblog, I was so excited. Why I felt so excited? In this weblog, teacher told us we had to use English only and post on Internet. For me, I’m use to Chinese to post anything. I seldom use English to post on. When I read my final weblog just only English, I felt it looks so professional so that I so excited.

Describe your chatting experience with your peers

Describe your chatting experience with your peers
At the beginning, teacher told us that we should to chatting in class for 20 to 30 minutes. First of all, most of us thought chat was easier to proceed. In fact, it was not the true. It was too difficult to proceed. Why was so difficult? Most people were use to their first language. In this chatting, we should to use English with our group members.
I thought it was difficult for Chinese students, especially we should use English to proceed this chatting. Even thought we are English learners. A few time later, we didn’t know how to start our English chatting. If we had any idea that can help us easier to do our English chatting, but all of us had no idea. The other reason is we felt a little shy. Why did we feel shy? The chatting had to post on our weblog. It means many different kind of people can read our chatting contents so that we felt uncomfortable. We didn’t know how to start our chatting, and then we asked each other members that choose one topic can help us to start our chatting. Five minutes passed, we also hadn’t any idea. In fact, all of us did not have any idea because we are new classmates. In the other words, we are not familiar with each other. Suddenly, one of our group members, Ruth, started to sing a song, No Bravery, the first lyric is “ I see no bravery, no bravery, in your eyes anymore, only sadness.” But she change the lyric “ I see no battery, no battery, in my phone anymore, only turn off.” We laughed and felt very interesting. Then, Asta also change the lyric “ I see no salary, no salary, in my job anymore, only poorness. Both of their strange lyric were very funny, but members should know that song and what did they talk about, or they will feel confuse. In this chatting, I learned a lot of web-language just like what r u doin? What r u doin b4? O my god…ect. These sentences mean what are you doing? What are you doing before? Oh my god. A lot of interesting web-language I can learn from chatting and use it, but I don’t think it is use for. Why I say it is not use for? In the world, most people have inertia. It means if we use web-language to become habit, we will forget original words. However, it is convenient for us to do chatting, but this phenomenon is not a good thing so that I don’t recommend people to use web-language. Anyway, for me, this chatting experience with my peers was so great that can help us to know each others.

Weblog is a good space to share some information to others, especially other English learners. We can use weblog to share some good news, English skils and any information what you want. In the other hand, weblog is convenient and useful.
